India’s Paris Olympic Games bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat will be seen in action at the May 29 to June 1 third UWW world ranking series in Mongolia’s Capital Ulaanbaatar, a senior wrestling coach said.
Mongolia will be the first event of the season for Sehrawat who competes in 57kg weight class.
“Sehrawat along with the medal winners of Asian wrestling championships held earlier in April in Jordan have been excluded from the national selection trials for the third world ranking series in Ulaanbaatar,” the wrestling coach added.
“The selection trials will be held in weight categories in which the Indian contingent didn’t win medals in Jordan, Amman.”
The men’s freestyle and Greco Roman national selection trials are scheduled for May 12 at Sports Authority of India (SAI) campus in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The women’s selection trials will be held in Delhi on May 13.
Sehrawat skipped the 2025 Senior Asian Wrestling Championships selection trials for personal reasons.
Chirag, the Worlds U23 champion was outstanding in the national trials and represented India at the 2025 Asian meet in men’s 57 kg event. Chirag, however, couldn’t win a medal as he lost his opening match.
The WFI will also give chance to Chirag and other wrestlers for the third ranking series. “The WFI plans to send two male wrestlers in the 57kg freestyle event to Mongolia,” the wrestling coach familiar with the development said. However, in all other categories only one player will be selected.
“There is a provision to send two wrestlers in one weight category for the world ranking series. Therefore we want to give Sehrawat a chance to polish his skills ahead of the World Championships in September,” one of the officials of the WFI said.
Meanwhile, a two-months long national wrestling camp got underway from May 1 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh for men. The women’s camp has started at the IG Stadium complex in Delhi. The national camps in wrestling are being after a gap of two years. Camps have not been held since the protests by top wrestlers. The WFI remained suspended by sports ministry for a long time. Earlier this year WFI’s suspension was revoked, leading to return of normalcy has in Indian wrestling.
