Simranjit Kaur, 29, from Punjab recently turned pro and didn’t respond to ad-hoc panel calls to attend short camp in Patiala for Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament from May 24 to June 1.

Punjab’s Simranjit Kaur, Asian and World medallist pulls out of Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament starting Saturday in Bangkok, an official familiar with the development said. Simranjit, 29, turned pro recently and didn’t join the national camp at NIS (National Institute of Sports) Patiala, Punjab. The Punjab boxers also competed at the 2020Tokyo Olympic Games held in Japan in 2021.
“Due to paucity of time, we couldn’t find Simranjit’s replacement in the 60-65kg group for the international exposure tour,” a senior boxing official added.
The ad-hoc panel of BFI (Boxing Federation of India) is fielding nine female member team while all 10 male boxers were selected for the Thailand tour.
All boxers who finished second in their respective weight categories at the national competition held in Greater Noida in the women’s section (Uttar Pradesh) and men’s section was held in Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh).
The Thailand Open will be the first international exposure for Indian female boxers to showcase their potential. Due to warring factions of the BFI, the women’s team was denied a ticket to season opening Boxing World Cup in Brazil.
However, the gold medal winners of the national competitions in both men and women’s section are training in Patiala and are expected to compete in next month’s Boxing World Cup.
