My next goal is to break 45 seconds barrier in 400m, says Vishal TK

Vishal TK wins 400m gold medal with a national record at the 64th National Inter State Senior Athletics Championships in Chennai

Tamil Nadu’s Vishal TK wins gold in 400m race with a national record of 45.12 seconds in Chennai on Thursday.

Tamil Nadu’s promising international quarter-miler, Vishal TK, ran a race of his life here at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Thursday but missed the World Athletics Championships automatic entry standard in the men’s 400m event.

On his way to the gold medal in the men’s 400m race, the 22 years old clocked 45.12 seconds, a national record, but fell short of 44.85 seconds to win a ticket to Worlds in Japan on the second day of the 64th National Inter State Senior Athletics Championships. The Tokyo World Athletics Championships will start September 13 in Japan.

I’ve been very consistent this year in the 400m. All races were sub-46 seconds, Vishal said after his record-breaking performance today. “I was confident of improving my personal best. I’m happy to have improved the national record. My goal next year is to break the 45 seconds barrier,” he added.

Vishal had on Wednesday posted a time of 45.78 seconds in the semifinal leg of 400m and was considered favourite to win gold. In the final on Thursday, he further improved his performance to erase Muhammed Anas national record of 45.21 seconds clocked in 2019 in Kladno, Czech Republic.

The National Inter-State meet record of 45.51 seconds was in the name of Muhammed Ajmal set in 2023 in Bhubaneswar.

Vishal emerged the fastest Indian male 400m runner in May at the Gumi Asian Athletics Championships held in South Korea. The Tamil Nadu runner fought hard for a bronze but finished fourth clocking a personal best of 45.57 seconds.
