Next major stop for global athletes will be inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest

The DebswanaWorld Athletics Relays held on May 2 and 3 in Gaborone, Botswana, was an excellent platform for participating nations from across the globe to win tickets to next year’s World Athletics Championships in Beijing.

The global relay carnival organised on African soil for the first time also offered place in the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest from September 11 to 13 in Hungary, to top six finalists in each of the six relay events.

The opening day on May 2 was the first qualification round for the Worlds 2027. The top two teams in each of the heats in addition to fastest two teams qualified for World Championships 2027. The top eight teams in each of the relay events also advanced to the medal round held on Sunday (May 3).

The second round of qualification took place on Sunday. In addition to the top eight teams in each of the six relay events that qualified for Worlds next year in China on day-one, the remaining four automatic slots were filled on day two (May 3).     

Competition was organised in men’s 4x100m and 4x400m. The women’s 4x100m and 4x400m. Mixed 4x100m and 4x400m relay event was also part of the programme in Gaborone.

The top six teams in each of the mixed 4x100m and mixed 4x400m finals also got an automatic berth for the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest.
