Asian U23 Athletics Championships: Javelin thrower Anand Singh joins 80m club, adds gold medal to India’s tally

More than half-a-dozen Indian javelin thrower have better the 80m mark in the last two years. Neeraj Chopra holds the national record of 90.23m set last year in Doha.

India’s promising javelin thrower Anand Singh is the latest thrower to join the 80m club. On his way to winning the gold medal at the inaugural edition of the Asian U23 Athletics Championships that concluded Sunday in the Chinese city of Ordos, his best throw was 80.57m, a personal best.

Shivam Lohakare, second Indian in the fray won the bronze medal with a distance of 77.70m. Shivam Lohakare also has recorded an 80m plus throw in the recent past. Two medals in men’s javelin throw at the continental competition exemplify depth in the domestic field.

At the senior level, Uttar Pradesh international Rohit Yadav is the latest javelin thrower to achieve a big throw of 87.05m. He is currently the leading Indian javelin thrower this season. Olympic and World champion Neeraj Chopra started his season late and a season best of 85.69m was recorded at Doha Diamond League. Neeraj Chopra holds the national record of 90.23m.

Three javelin throwers, including Rohit Yadav and Neeraj Chopra will compete at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games starting July 23. Yashvir Singh is the third thrower who will be seen in action in Glasgow.
