Ahead of the men’s junior Asia Cup hockey tournament in China, PR Sreejesh overseeing the junior men’s team has been sacked by Hockey India to pave the way for foreign hockey expert. Former star Indian goalkeeper who has been coach of the junior men’s team for 18 long months took to social media to air his views saying, “Can’t Indian coaches develop India hockey.”  

“It’s seems like my coaching career comes to an end after 1.5 years during which we played five tournaments and secured five podium including bronze at 2025 Junior World Cup,” Sreejesh stated on his social media platform.

“Coaches being fired for bad performance but this is the first time I am experiencing being removed to make way for a foreign coach,” he further said.  

Hockey India in a statement says, coaching term for P.R. Sreejesh was officially concluded as per contract in December 2025. After this, as per protocol the position was advertised and applicants were shortlisted and finalised as per a proper selection process basis merit, the Hockey India statement said.

“A coach with distinguished qualification has been selected as a result of this process and will be announced shortly,” Hockey India statement said.

Hockey India says Sreejesh was offered the position of coach for the development team which he refused.
