The Athletics Federation of India will field a strong 77-member contingent at Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games

Glasgow Commonwealth Games bronze medallist in men’s javelin throw, Yashvir Singh, to replace ace javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra for the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games starting September 19 in Japan. The AFI (Athletics Federation of India) announced a strong 77-member Indian contingent for the Japan Asian Games.  The Indian athletics squad, according to Bahadur Singh Sagoo, president, AFI, will also attend a Pre-Asian Games camp in Tsukuba from September 13 to 21.

India’s ace javelin thrower and defending champion, Neeraj Chopra, is on the injured list and will be replaced by Yashvir Singh. “India’s leading hurdler (110m hurdles) Tejas Ashok Shirse is also on the injured list. He has pulled out of the Asian Games,” the AFI president added. 

The goal of the Indian track and field squad will be to improve overall performance at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games starting September 19 in Japan, says Sagoo. At the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games held in 2023 in China, the Indian athletics contingent won six gold medals, 14 silver medals and nine bronze medals. “We had won 29 medals at the last Asian Games in China. We are confident that the overall performance will be better this time in Japan,” the AFI president said on Thursday.
