India’s 27 years old Karman Kaur Thandi lost her opening match of the women’s singles qualifier to Harmony Tan of France 6-1, 6-0 at French Open on Tuesday.

On her comeback from injury, the former India’s No 1 wasn’t impressive on the clay court. Her overall performance suggests the ace tennis player might take longer than expected to regain top class fitness.

Karman Kaur Thandi got entry to the Grand Slam women singles qualifier on a Protected Ranking following her return from injury.

Karman earned her spot in the elite qualification draw based on her Protected Ranking (PR) of 238, which secured her the 119th position on the official entry list. The Protected Ranking system helps players transition back into top-tier tournaments following an extended injury interruption, allowing the former India number 1 to claim her spot among the world’s best.

She claimed to be competitive fitness. But the way she lost the match in 48 minutes against Frenchwomen on Tuesday at Roland Garros, it suggests she might take more time to enhance her mental and physical fitness to showcase her potential at a bigger stage. She practices at Roundglass Tennis Academy in Chandigarh.
