India’s trap shooter Neeru Dhanda etched her name in the record books at Asian Games in Japan on Tuesday. The 26 years old won a gold medal in the women’s trap event, first by an Indian female shooter, with an Asian Games record of 28. The previous best was 24. The promising trap shooter also ended the gold medal drought at the continental games. The Indian trap shooters—Neeru Dhanda, Aashima Ahlawat and Manisha Keer won team silver with a score of 328. Aashima Ahlawat and Manisha Keer failed to enter the final round in the individual category.

Neeru shot 118 out of 125 in the qualification to advance into the medal round. After a good run in the qualification, Neeru stamped her authority in the final. With steady shooting she continued to march forward and eventually won the gold medal.

Earlier this year she had won gold at the World Cup in Italy.

India’s late sports administrator and shotgun shooter Randhir Singh, had won a gold in men’s trap event at 1978 Bangkok Asian Games. Randhir Singh, a former member of the IOC (International Olympic Committee) and president of OCA (Olympic Council of Asia) passed away recently.
