When the Indian women’s hockey team took to the playground to face Germany for the fifth-sixth position of the FIH World Cup 2026 at Amstelveen’s Wagener Stadium, they played their hearts out. The results were outstanding: After a barren first half, India outplayed Germany 3-1 to finish fifth in the global competition marking a new beginning in women’s hockey. It was the best result since 1974.
The 3-1 win over Germany has come at a time when the Indian team is looking forward to an automatic qualification berth for the Los Angeles Olympic Games.

China finished eighth in the FIH World Cup, and is one of the strong contenders for Asian Games gold. Japan and Korea are the other two teams that can upset the applecart of the leading teams.
