Indian boxing team looks to win a big haul of medals in Glasgow

Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain has assured herself a medal without even stepping on to the ring at the boxing competition at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Borgohain, who has entered in the 75kg weight class, got a bye in the first round and would be competing directly in the semifinals.

Eight out of 14 Indian boxers have received byes in the first round. Besides Lovlina, Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), Priya Ghanghas (60kg), and Preeti Saipawar (54kg) have also got byes in the first round.

There are only five boxers in Lovlina’s weight class. The 28-year-old will now directly compete in the semifinals.

India would be looking to the boxers for a good haul of medals in Glasgow CWG. In the last edition in Birmingham, India won seven medals in boxing. The women boxers have been giving consistent results at international meets and will be expected to deliver.

Sakshi Chaudhary, who beat Nikhat Zareen in the selection trials, will be hoping for a podium finish in 51kg weight division. Paris Olympians Preeti and Jaismine would be looking to win gold medals.

Among men, there are several new faces and they would also want to make the most of the opportunity. Hopes will be high from seasoned Sachin Siwach (60kg) and Narender Berwal (+90kg), while new faces Jadumani Singh (55kg), and Aditya Pratap (65kg), will look to test their preparations for bigger battles like the Asian Games.

Men: Jadumani Singh (55kg), Sachin Siwach (60kg), Aditya Pratap Singh (65kg), Sumit Kundu (70kg), Ankush (80kg), Kapil Pokhariya (90kg), Narender Berwal (+90kg).
