Olympian Elavenil Valarivan clinches individual silver and was member of the Indian squad that won team silver in 10m air rifle.

The Indian shooting squad began their campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan with two silver medals in women’s 10m air rifle on Sunday. The competition was conducted at Aichi Prefectural General Shooting Gallery.

A steady shooting by Olympian Elavenil Valarivan in the women’s 10m air rifle eight shooters final enabled her to clinch individual silver with a score of 252.4. Japan’s Hinata Taichi took the gold medal with a new Asian Games record of 253.0. South Korea’s Olympic Champion Ban Hyojin took home the bronze medal with a score of 230.4.

Earlier, the Indian women’s team of the trio of Elavenil, Sonam Uttam Maskar and Vidarsa Kochalumkal Vinod won team silver. The Indian team aggregate qualification scores was 1898.0.

Sonam Uttam Maskar also featured in the eight-woman final, but finished sixth.

Sonam’s qualifying score was 634.1. Elavenil shot 633.5. Vidarsa scored 630.4.

China took the team gold medal with a total of 1904.2. Hosts Japan won the team bronze medal with an aggregate score of 1897.1.
