The Budapest Ranking Series held from July 15 to 19 in Hungary was good preparation for upcoming Asian Games in Japan, says Chief National Greco Roman Coach Hargobind Singh.
India’s Greco Roman squad weren’t successful in winning medals at the just concluded Budapest Ranking Series in Hungary. The tournament was held from July 15 to 19 in all three formats—men’s freestyle, Greco Roman and women’s freestyle event.
Three Indian wrestlers Lalit (55kg), Sunny Kumar (63kg) and Anil (72kg) were successful in reaching the bronze medal match. But failed to win play-off matches in their respective weight categories.
The Indian team didn’t win a medal but the competition was good preparation for upcoming Asian Games, claims India’s Chief National Greco Roman coach Hargobind Singh. “The Indian wrestlers didn’t win a medal in Budapest. But all the wrestlers gave a good account of themselves,” the coach added. “The wrestlers also earned valuable ranking points in Hungary.”
In the 55kg bronze medal match India’s Lalit lost to Iskhar Kurbayev of Kazakhstan 10-18. Sunny Kumar also lost 1-3 in the 63kg bronze medal match to Russia’s Zhambolat Lokyaev. Anil was the third Indian wrestler (72kg) to lose his bronze medal match.
Sachin Sehrawat lost his 67kg repechage match to Din Mukhamed Koshkar Kazakhstan 0-6. Other Indian wrestlers in fray lost their pre-quarter and qualification round matches in the tournament. The Indian men and women’s freestyle squad won 12 medals, three of them gold medals in the Ranking Series.
