The Asian Games women’s freestyle wrestling preparatory camp at Delhi’s IG Stadium has temporarily closed down due to renovation work, an official familiar with the development said. It has been nearly a fortnight since the Asian Games national preparatory camp was closed down due to renovation work at the IG Stadium. Alternate venue is yet to be decided.

“The wrestlers have been told to practice at their own respective academies or akhara’s,” the official added.

Collective training with different sparring partners is an added advantage in combat sport like wrestling. That too preparing for a major event like the Asian Games.

The men’s camp in Greco Roman and freestyle is in progress in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. “Renovation work is going on at IG Stadium. Hence it wasn’t conducive to organise practice,” another official associated with the national women’s camp told Sportsbackstory.com.  “It is uncertain when the national camp will resume again.”

The IG Stadium is under Sports Authority of India (SAI) jurisdiction. WFI is yet to find an alternative for the women’s camp for collective training ahead of the Asian Games.

Sanjay Singh, president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) when contacted wasn’t available for his comments.

The national women’s team is expected to compete in the UWW (United World Wrestling) ranking series tournament in Hungary in July.
